Sony Pictures has teamed with Media Rights Capital to once again attempt an adaptation of  Steven King’s The Dark Tower novel series, Deadline is reporting.

The series has been languishing in development hell for a long time (see “Will MRC Rescue 'Dark Tower'?”) , having been picked up and then abandoned by both Warner Bros. and Universal since 2010. The ambitious plan initially included three movies and a complementary TV series, and Sony is set to distribute the first in a planned series of movies, with MRC developing the supporting TV series.

A new script based primarily on The Gunslinger, was co-written by Akiva Goldman and Jeff Pinkner.  The new version has been completely reconceived by the writers from the one that was in prior development.

Marvel began adapting The Dark Tower novels into comics in 2007 with The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born.  More recently, Marvel has been exploring the novels from different angles with original content (see “'Dark Tower: Drawing of the Three--The Prisoner'”), and it began the second chapter, Drawing of the Three: House of Cards, in March.
