According to The Hollywood Reporter J.J. Abrams is negotiating with Stephen King to bring King's seven-volume Dark Tower series to the screen.  King's Dark Tower combines elements from multiple genres (western, horror, science fiction and fantasy), and no decision has been made yet as to whether the sprawling series is better suited to something like a trilogy of feature films or to an even more expansive treatment on television.

According to the Reporter a number of Hollywood entities have previously attempted to get the rights to Dark Tower, but King has rebuffed those overtures.  He is a big fan of Abrams' television series Lost, which would appear to indicate that Abrams has a pretty good chance of acquiring the rights.

Marvel recently launched its comic book adaptation of King's Dark Tower with a special midnight preview -- and a screen adaptation would only help to further popularize the property, which Marvel will be rolling out for some years in both periodical and graphic novel formats.
