Jef Hinds of Jef Hinds Comics in Madison, Wisconsin read saw the news about the fall-out concerning Captain America #25 (see 'Death of Cap Press Overwhelms Retailers') and says a little speculation is good for the market:

I would agree that manipulated shortages or artificial scarcity can eventually have a backlash effect on demand in the market. However, accidental or coincidental supply/demand imbalance events can be very good for the market.  As it is in this case.  The market needs an X-factor (no pun intended) or a 'zinger' to keep everyone on their toes.  This is what keeps the secondary market always watching and waiting. Let them have their spoils every now and then.

If supply remains permanently short it will end up bringing many more people into the market.  Good for everyone.  A good storyline is fine but nothing generates word of mouth buzz like 'look what this book from last month is worth'.

I would never want a return to the early 1990s because that was artificial and manipulated -- doomed from the start to fail at some point.  Companies cannot really create a 'collectors item.' It must happen as a sort of accident.  Cap #25 might just fit the bill.
