Gene Smith of Alien Entertainment Company in Lombard, Illinois saw other retailer comments about damages (see 'Stewart Vernon of Stewart's Comics on Damages') and thinks Diamond packs better than many other suppliers:

I just finished reading the posts on Diamond's shipping damages and have to say that they pack better than many of our other suppliers.

Many of our shipments coming from the UK are packed so poorly it is amazing the product is not destroyed (thank goodness we do not use UPS on most of our International deliveries).  UPS is brutal on parcels due to the large volume they handle and that fact that their drivers need to move quickly.  FedEx, DHL and TNT all do a better job in keeping damages low.

I believe that many of the damaged items we receive from Diamond were damaged prior to being shipped to us.  This holds true in the cases of toys we receive where the figures packing is bent or crushed and so is the shipping box but the extra cardboard Diamond puts around the box is perfect.  We do not buy many comic books but the magazine damage is every week and we have been letting the small dings and dents pass as well as some of the toy damage otherwise we would be making weekly claims.

Perhaps we should all file claims on all damage (even the little ones) for like a month or two so Diamond could gauge the true total amount of damages and where they happen to try and fix some of the problems.  Just an idea -- don't want to get the giant angry!

Diamond can make some improvements by having their personnel double check the items being packed for obvious signs of damage before packing the items.  We try to order in full cases whenever possible to minimize damages and I still can't figure out why Diamond opens the factory sealed cases (trading cards and toys in particular) and then repacks the product.  This is such a waste of time unless there is another motive to that madness.  The Diamond 'double shipper' as we call it (C400 box) is great and we reuse all packing materials except boxes that are falling apart when we ship our wholesale orders.

Just my point of view.
