Noah Broessel of Pop Culture Paradise in Tempe, Arizona saw other retailer comments about damages (see 'Stewart Vernon of Stewart's Comics on Damages') and has ideas on what makes sense and what doesn't to prevent them:

Last week I had only a few damages considering I received over 20 boxes but the shortages last week (and the prior 2-3 weeks) have made me scratch my head.

I was missing five or six hardcovers and one of the Price Guides I ordered.  It's frustrating to me because I hate reporting this many shortages as I'm afraid Diamond will want to call me out on this.

Obviously the Diamond warehouses are understaffed and short on time.  There is no way they are going to double box everything with a two inch cushion.  The comic boxes which are double boxed normally come okay and for me most of the damage is due to boxes being put on the side causing some books to slide and bend.  The outer box isn't thick, so if they upgraded one level more it would improve; the two inner boxes are definitely sturdy.
