Anime on DVD is reporting that ADV has confirmed the acquisition of the 24-episode Kanon anime series produced by Kyoto Animation. The Kyoto Kanon is actually the second anime series based on the Key visual novel (PC Game) Kanon, which was originally released in 1999 when it was voted the best bishojo game of the year. The original version of the Kanon Visual Novel was rated 18+ and included nudity and explicit sex scenes, but like Air, another erotic visual novel produced by Key that inspired an anime series from Kyoto Animation released here by ADV, Kanon was made available in an all-ages version that quickly spun off manga series, light novels, and anime adaptations.
Toei animation produced a 13-episode Kanon series in 2002, while the Kyoto Animation series acquired by ADV ran on Japanese TV from October of 2006 to March of 2007. According to AOD ADV will release the first DVD in the Kanon series in January (a month after the release of the Air movie in which the Kanon characters make cameo appearances) with subsequent releases on a monthly basis through the first half of 2008.
The Kanon anime is a slice of life/romance/harem drama following the adventures of multiple heroines that weave together like the musical form that gives the series its name (Pachelbel's Canon in D Major is used throughout the series).
Kyoto Animation, which is affiliated with Sunrise, has become the 'hot' studio in the estimation of many of American anime fans thanks to the high quality of its releases. Kyoto Animation has produced only seven anime series -- the studio's output includes The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Air, Lucky Star, Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu, Clannad, Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid, and Kanon.
