Hollywood news has made it into bonus rounds after San Diego Comic-Con. So, this week, there is a Bonus Showbiz Round-Up!
Paramount Global is expected to complete its merger with Skydance Media by August 7, 2025, according to Variety. The $8 billion deal, which has been ongoing since 2024 due to a variety of twists and turns (see "Paramount"), will merge Paramount and Skydance into Paramount Skydance Corp. The company's Class B common stock will be listed on NASDAQ as the ticker symbol "PSKY" after the conclusion of the deal.
Adult Swim announced a new Rick and Morty spinoff at SDCC, according to Variety. President Curtis will center on the satirical U.S. President from the original series, and star Keith David, Stephane Beatriz, and Jim Rash. Dan Harmon and James Siciliano will serve as executive producers for the spinoff. Last year, Adult Swim renewed Rick and Morty for up to 12 seasons (see "'Rick and Morty' Renewed Through S12").
Crunchyroll will roll out Crunchyroll Anime Nights starting in October 2025. This is a theatrical program bringing an anime feature to 225 U.S. theaters on the third Monday of every month as a special event. The first two events will feature Miss Kobayahi's Dragon Maid (see "Yuri Manga 101") and Overlord.
Disney released a trailer for Tron: Ares (see below). This movie, featuring the music of Nine Inch Nails (see "'Tron: Ares"), will hit IMAX theaters on October 10, 2025.
HBO Max revealed a trailer for Peacemaker Season 2 (see below). The second season of the series, starring John Cena, will start streaming on August 21, 2025 (see "'Peacemaker' S2").
Paramount Plus released a first look trailer for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy (see below). The latest Star Trek series, coming in 2026, stars Sandro Rosta, Karim Diane, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, Bella Shepard, Zoe Steiner, and Holly Hunter, who heads up the Starfleet Academy. Paul Giamatti will also have a recurring role in the series (see "'Starfleet Academy'").
