A hybrid live action/animated Smurfs feature film is in development by Columbia and Sony, according to Variety. The writers from the second and third Shrek films, David Stem and David Weiss, are negotiating to write the script.
A combination of computer generated animation and live action, similar to the successful combination used for Alvin and the Chipmunks, is contemplated. Michael Lynton, CEO of Sony Pictures, reportedly was attracted to the film because of his familiarity with the Belgian comics on which the property is based.
Licensing will, of course, accompany the rejuvenation of the property.
