The marketing for the Spider-Man movie is ramping up to the release in just over a week and expectations are high. Ad Age reports that HSX Research is estimating a $213 million box office for the film in its first four weeks.
On the PR front, Entertainment Weekly's Summer Movie Preview issue (April 26 cover date) has a Spider-Man cover featuring stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. Inside there's a seven-page feature on the film. And also this week, TV Guide sports four different Spider-Man covers and a story within.
Ad Age also reports that Sony is courting an older female audience (over 25) with its marketing for Spider-Man in addition to the young male target for the property. Perhaps that's why the upside-down kiss scene is getting heavy play in TV ads. It's cited as one aspect of the smart marketing that's required to avoid the sharp drop-off in box-office revenues that most blockbusters experience in the weeks after release.
The tie-in to Free Comic Book Day makes this an especially important movie release for many pop culture retailers, who are rooting for the movie to help support the many other promotionial activities that are planned (see 'Expectations High for Free Comic Book Day').
