The success of Monsters vs. Aliens, which generated the majority of its grosses from the minority of its screens where the film was shown in 3-D, has apparently accelerated Tinseltown’s rush to embrace the extra-dimensional format. According to The Hollywood Reporter Disney is releasing Pixar’s Toy Story and Toy Story 2 as a 3-D double feature on October 2nd. The double feature will also include a 3-D trailer for Toy Story, which is being made in the 3-D process and opens on June 18, 2010. Toy Story, which was released in 1995, and Toy Story 2 from 1999 are both being re-mastered in the new computer 3-D process.
Disney had originally planned to release the first two Toy Story movies in 3-D on separate dates months apart (see “Toy Story Goes 3-D”), but decided to combine the two films into killer double feature. If the 3-D re-mastered Toy Story movies are successful, Disney is likely to repeat the process on other films in its extensive catalog.
According to THR Disney now has a slate of 17 films slated for the 3-D format including Tim Burton’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. The Mouse House also plans to release all of its future computer-animated features in 3-D.
