The Spirit, with a disappointing box office total, was nonetheless the #1 Blu-ray disc for the week ending April 18th, with a strong showing as a DVD as well.

The Spirit was the #1 DVD seller for the week, according to Rentrak information published by Video Business, and #2 according to Nielsen Videoscan info published by Home Media.

The Spirit was the #2 DVD rental on the Videoscan charts, and #3 on the Rentrak charts.

With a box office gross of under $20 million since its release on Christmas last year, the Frank Miller-directed film based on the Will Eisner character was one of the biggest flops of all comic-based films.  But it’s not unusual for a film to do poorly at the box office and better on DVD, and people that skipped it at the theaters now seem to be picking it up on disc.

It is easy to see why The Spirit was #1 on Blu-ray.  Not only does the film look great in the Blu-ray transfer, the BD version also comes with a digital copy for downloading to portable devices, and a host of cool extras including a “Miller on Miller” featurette that all Frank Miller fans will enjoy, plus the obligatory feature on the “green screen” technique, an alternate storyboard ending with voiceovers by Samuel L. Jackson and Gabriel Macht, and a great BD Live feature that allows users to insert shapes, audio, and text into the film.
