John Shableski of Diamond Book Distributors sent us info on what sounds like an excellent graphic novel panel at BookExpo America, the only programming devoted to the category at the show.  “Hot Fall Graphic Novels for Libraries,” at 2:30 on Saturday, May 30th, brings together four top librarians from the YALSA Great Graphic Novels for Teens Committee.

Publishers were asked to submit graphic novel releases planned for September 1st or after, and the panel reviewed them.  Each of the four panelists will present one graphic novel title in each of four categories:  children, tween, teen, and adult.  The material will be visible on screen during the presentation.  At the end, attendees will receive a written list of the panelists’ suggestions, along with a list of “B” titles that just missed making the cut.

The four panelists are Eva Volin (an ICv2 reviewer), who managed bookstores for ten years before becoming a librarian.  She was a judge on the 2008 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, and is currently chair of the YALSA Great Graphic Novels for Teens Committee.

Jesse Karp reviews graphic novels for Booklist, blogs about them for GuysLitWire, and has delivered seminars on the topic.

Barbara Moon is a reviewer for School Library Journal, has been a teacher as well as a librarian, has organized graphic novel symposia, led a session on graphic novels at the National Council of Teachers of English annual conference, and is a frequent presenter at workshops for school and public librarians.

Christian Zabriskie was an editor and sales rep at Houghton Mifflin before becoming a librarian.

Shableski, a judge for the 2009 Eisner Awards, will moderate the panel.
