The rebranding of SciFi Channel to SyFy is underway, with one of the first promotions free wireless Internet at various locations in New York, branded “WyFy from SyFy,” according to Broadcasting and Cable.  The Fark blog brought it all home for those that oppose the rebranding when it described the promotion with another rhyme:  “SyFy is giving away free Wyfy in a stunt that makes you hope the channel will DyFy.”

In addition to the free Internet promotion, the New York relaunch will include an interactive Imagination Park near Rockefeller Plaza that will run events from July 7-12; and a sponsorship of the Tim Burton exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in November.

Broader events will include a three minute brand film, and a larger presence at San Diego Comic-Con International.

The renaming of the network was announced in March (see “SciFi Becomes SyFy”).  There was a lot of negative reaction, including boos from a founder of the network (see “SciFi Founder Hats SyFy”).
