Bart Bush of Atomik Pop! of Norman, Oklahoma has been following the recent discussion regarding the cover price of comic books (see "Michael Breakfield of Lone Star Comics on Comic Book Prices") and had this to add.
As a veteran of 34 years selling new comic books, I must comment on the current "crisis" in the comic book collecting world. HEY MARVEL and DC... $3.99 is too much for a comic book! You are driving away casual customers. The die-hards are cutting back and avoiding new ones.
Collectors are becoming disgruntled with the current unaffordable glut and are dropping out of the market. 14 Batman titles and 12 X-Men titles in December? Too many! Fans will not buy them all and keep up with other titles. They feel drowned in titles they would like to own but cannot afford and it becomes easier and easier to cut back or quit completely. So who is winning here? We're selling fewer comics and fewer customers have sustained interest at current price levels.
Give customers a chance to keep up with your universes so interest will flourish... not have them be avoided because there are too many titles to afford!
