John Gavin of York Comics and Cards in Parma, Ohio saw Timothy Davis' plea for more comics for kids (see 'Timothy Davis of Alternate Reality Comics for Kids'), and sent us this comment, which in addition to agreeing with the concept, makes a specific suggestion about the type of title(s) that might work best.
I would also like to put forth my comments on the lack of suitable comics for children. My store is directly across the street from a Catholic elementary school and a public elementary school. We have a large audience for books for this age group but there are very few available. For the boys at least I have Batman and Justice League Adventures (although I think most of the 80's revival books are a good choice). For the girls, I'm stuck with Archie and Powerpuff Girls. What I do is purchase older collections of Disney and Dell books. Most of these can be sold for what the cost of a new comic is today. This gives me the option of having books available for the younger age group. I would recommend that all retailers look at books of this genre and not pass up the purchase of them with the thinking that these won't sell. They do sell, if marketed and priced properly.
Also, maybe it's time that one of the Big Two companies look into putting together a liscensing deal similar to what Four Color had during the forties to the sixties. Marketing a title like Four Color would be very easy. Three or four books a month with a rotating cast of stories.
