The Hollywood trades are reporting that Relativity Media’s rebooting of James O’Barr’s The Crow is back on track. First came word that the lawsuit filed by the Weinstein Company (the Weinsteins produced the first Crow film, see “Litigation Clouds The Crow” for details on the suit) had been settled. Unfortunately, though the lawsuit is now over, it did put an end to Relativity’s plan to remake The Crow with Bradley Cooper in the title role and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directing since both Cooper and Fresnadillo were in demand and moved on to other projects.
Deadline now reports that Jesse Wigutow has been hired to rewrite the screenplay for The Crow reboot. Wigutow has written the script for Irreparable Harm, which is set up at HBO films, and performed a rewrite on Robert Ludlum’s The Osterman Weekend for Summit. Next came news that F. Javier Guttierez, who helmed Before the Fall, has signed on to direct the remake of The Crow.
The fact that Relativity has moved so quickly after the legal settlement demonstrates how anxious the studio is to get the project moving. Does this mean that we will see new version of The Crow in the near future? Of course not, but the project, which was totally dormant just weeks ago, has gained some much needed momentum.
