IDW Publishing will release cover variants of 11 comics in September depicting the characters in the style of classic cartoons. The promotion, called "IDW Gets Animated," is happening across the licensed books Doctor Who, Ghostbusters, G.I. Joe, Judge Dredd, Popeye Classics, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, and X-Files; as well as Black Dynamite, Danger Girl: The Chase, and T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents.
The "IDW Gets Animated" promotion is happening the same month as Marvel’s 21 LEGO variants (see "Marvel Plans 21 LEGO Variants").
These represent a different kind of variant promotion, in which one goal is to drive interest across a number of books, perhaps exposing readers to new titles in the process. There’s also some solace in the fact that the two September promotions combined are still subdued compared to DC’s notorious 52 variants for Justice League of America #1 (see "Variant Covers Jumping the Shark?"). But the cumulative total is still a lot of variants into a market that already has a pretty heavy variant load.
