David Lapham, whose kids vs. giant bugs opus Juice Squeezers graduates from Dark Horse Presents to a new ongoing Dark Horse Comic series in December, has created another series for DHC, the fanciful Kid McAllister: Electric Cowboy, which will debut with 22-page first issue in May of 2014. Lapham, whose best known work is the neo-noir saga Stray Bullets, has apparently settled into a new groove that pairs bizarre concepts with character-driven storytelling. Lapham, who has worked in multiple genres for multiple publishers (see "David Lapham Does 'Caligula'"), previously created a 4-issue Kull miniseries for Dark Horse (see "Dark Horse Adds 3 Robert E. Howard Series").
Lapham told Comics Alliance that the concept for Kid McAllister came out a desire to do something "fun and science fiction." First he came up with the title Kid McAllister: Electric Cowboy, which "sparked this notion of a hero with electrical powers who was really old, but a side effect of his powers was they kept him from going through puberty." The "kid" in question is searching for a place where he belongs, and where he can find refuge from the aliens that are pursuing him.
According to Lapham, while Juice Squeezers is an "all ages" "PG" book, Kid McAllister will skew a bit older, akin to a "PG-13" movie.
