Longtime industry writer and artist John Byrne saw surprise success with his fumetti/photonovel Star Trek Annual 2013. Now IDW Publishing will launch an ongoing photonovel series by Byrne, Star Trek New Visions, in May.
The term photonovel, sometimes called fumetti, refers to a comic adaptation of a film or TV episode using stills with text and word balloons. This new bi-monthly series will use images from the classic first Star Trek TV show in extra-length issues.
The story of the first issue takes the crew of the Enterprise through the looking glass in the aftermath of the "Mirror, Mirror" episode from the original Star Trek series. Star Trek New Visions #1--Mirror Cracked will be a 48-page, full-color title with a cover price of $7.99.
Star Trek Annual 2013 sold through its initial Diamond run and landed at #212 on the December Comic Sales chart (see "Top 300 Comics Actual--December 2013"). The title is headed for a reprint that should arrive in May, the same time as the new series.
