Warner Bros. Pictures has announced a date for their 3D feature film based on the LEGO Group’s hugely successful Ninjago series (see "'Ninjago' Gets Director"). The film will release September 23, 2016.
The ninja-inspired line of building sets, minifigures, books and graphic novels have already inspired the hit Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu cartoon series on Cartoon Network. The film will be directed by Charlie Bean, and produced by Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Lord and Miller co-wrote the screenplay and co-directed the hit LEGO Movie (see "'LEGO Movie' Bulldozes 80s Remakes"), which has grossed more than $254 million in the U.S. alone ($460 million worldwide) since its February 2014 opening. Warner Bros. is obviously hoping this property will produce similar numbers.
Papercutz’s Ninjago graphic novels are the top selling properties in the Kids and Tweens category (see "Top 10 Kids & Tweens Graphic Novel Properties--Fall/Holidays 2013").
