Awesomeness TV has sold a new live action half-hour series based on the Richie Rich comics to Netflix. The series will star Jake Brennan, who played Bobby Jessop on Dark Skies, in the title role.
Planned for debut in early 2015, the series is updated for the 21st century, and sees Richie Rich making his own trillions by inventing and selling a new green technology. He then moves into a mansion and starts living "the most awesome life ever." The 21-episode series will follow his exploits as he explores Antarctica, makes a movie with friends, and meets famous celebrities.
Brian Robbins (Smallville, Varsity Blues), Tim Pollock, and Jeff Hodsden will executive produce. Pollock and Hodsden, who have credits on Disney’s The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, The Suite Life on Deck, and A.N.T. Farm, will also serve as showrunners, and AwesomenessTV’s Shauna Phelan and Joe Davola will serve as executive producers.
The original "poor little rich boy" was created by Alfred Harvey and Warren Kremer, and first appeared in Little Dot #1 in 1953. Writers for the Richie Rich comic books and syndicated comic strip over the years have included Sid Jacobson, Lennie Herman, Stan Kay, and Ralph Newman. Kremer is the most well-known artist, but other artists have included Ernie Colon, Sid Couchey, Dom Sileo, Ben Brown, Steve Muffatti, and Joe Dennett.
Most recently, the late Ape Entertainment revived the series in 2011 (see "Two 'Richie Rich' Series") after licensing the series from Classic Media (see "'Richie Rich' Comics Return").
Media uses of the property include two animated TV series and two movies (one theatrical, one direct to video).
