Fantagraphics Books will release Massive: Gay Erotic Manga and the Men Who Make It, a 280-page 7" x 10" tome, in January. Edited by Anne Ishii and Graham Kolbeins and designed by uber-designer Chip Kidd, the volume collects manga, illustrations, and interviews with and photographs of the artists and their workspaces.
Manga-ka in the volume include Gengoroh Tagame, Jiraiya, Seizoh Ebisubashi, Kazuhide Ichikawa, Gai Mizuki, Takeshi Matsu, Fumi Miyabi, and Kumada Poohsuke.
The manga genre is a new one to most U.S. readers; "bara" is probably the most common word for it. It’s gay erotic manga created by men for men, a subgenre of seijin (men’s erotica). Bara is closer to seinen than to yaoi, which are gay manga created by women for women, a subset of shojo or josei.
Bara can also have a broader meaning of gay content generally, not just manga, and Men’s Love (ML) or gei comi are alternative terms for the genre.
