Spider-Man 2 Weekends will be held at 15 Major League Baseball stadiums the weekend of June 11-13th.  The promotion will include Spider-Man 2 logos on bases, pitcher mounds, and on-deck circles -- the first time that advertising has appeared in those locations in a major league stadium.  Also included in the promotion will be other signage, highlights from Spider-Man 2 on stadium video boards, and giveaways (which may include masks).

Major League Baseball and the host teams will promote the events locally and nationally.  That weekend features inter-league play, which normally has higher attendance than league games.

Major League Baseball is being paid approximately $3.6 million for its part in the promotion.  MLB said that it is participating to reach out to kids.  Tim Brosnan, EVP Business, MLB said, 'Spider-Man 2 Weekend is a part of our continuing marketing efforts to appeal to younger fans in new and non-traditional ways.'

The promotion is arousing a large amount of attention, primarily because of the new encroachment of commercial messages on to the baseball field.  The New York Daily News is reporting that the Yankees may not accept the logos on the field.

The deal is also being attacked by consumer advocates.  Consumer Alert has called for a national boycott of Sony products to protest the deal.

Spider-Man 2 Weekends will be held at the home stadiums of:

Anaheim Angels

Baltimore Orioles

Boston Red Sox

Chicago White Sox

Cleveland Indians

Detroit Tigers

Kansas City Royals

Milwaukee Brewers

Minnesota Twins

New York Yankees

Oakland Athletics

Seattle Mariners

Tampa Bay Devil Rays

Texas Rangers

Toronto Blue Jays

With this kind of attention, these games are bound to be sell-outs, and this clever amalgam of sport and entertainment will benefit both Major League Baseball and Spider-Man 2 (and its associated merchandise).
