Teresa Moran of Acadiana Book & Comic Shop in Lafayette, Louisiana has been following the debate on the date for the 2005 Free Comic Book Day (see 'FCBD 2005') and feels that comic-related movies are a great springboard for the event:

I've been reading the 'pros' and 'cons' of the May date for FCBD.  I was all for the May date until we had our biggest FCBD event yet, and it was July 3rd this year on a tough holiday weekend!

I think Joe Krolik's idea is great and he is probably right about it.  Whatever is decided, we will go along and make the very best of it.  I guess I still like using the major comics related movies as a springboard, and they help create so much excitement and focus on comics.  For me, it gives me and the whole event great impetus to work FCBD around a blockbuster movie!  And, it gives us a lot of potential customers to tap into from the theaters.  The theaters let us hand out hundreds of free Spider-Man, X-Men and Hulk comics, or whatever the movie is, with our invitation to FCBD and our party folded inside the comics.

The comic blockbuster movies creates a big market for us to tap into, all in one swoop.  Because the movies are so visible, and promoted by the movie industry with TV commercials, the local media is already primed when we send out our news releases about FCBD and movie theme party.  It helps them notice us and jump on FCBD.  I just would not be too quick to disregard the positive effect the blockbuster movies have in helping us to make our event a big success.  Sure, we could probably do it alone, but I really think our job would be a lot more difficult, and, I really don't think that we would get as many people out to the event.  Why snub our noses at something that gives us such great momentum?
