Steven Bates of Bookery Fantasy in Fairborn, Ohio saw the news on the casting of Lex Luthor (see 'Spacey Is Luthor') and had a reaction:

At long last, Lex Luthor and Lois Lane have been located.  The casting process of Bryan Singer's Superman re-launch has been under more scrutiny than the announcements of George W. Bush's cabinet.  Internet bulletin boards and chat rooms have been abuzz ever since it was revealed that relative unknown Brandon Routh was selected to wear the tights, edging out everyone else's first choice, Smallville's Tom Welling.  Now comes the news that Kevin Spacey will tackle Metropolis' megalomaniacal multimillionaire Lex Luthor, while Kate Bosworth will slip into the role of nosy news-hound and damsel-in-distress Lois Lane.  You'd think Singer had cast his barber and a waitress from Denny's, based on fans' reactions.

First, Spacey will be awesome as Lex Luthor, bringing a multifaceted dimension to the character only Smallville's Michael Rosenbaum could rival.  Previous Luthors, like Gene Hackman, John Shea, Lyle Talbot, and animated series voice actor Clancy Brown, wore their motivations on their sleeves, offering little in the way of depth or introspection.  Rosenbaum will be a tough act to follow, having made Luthor not only a complex but a complicated character, accomplishing what Star Wars' Hayden Christiansen could only dream of doing, making a sociopathic villain sympathetic.  But Spacey, known for roles that mine the emotional and intellectual caverns of the human condition, is more than capable. One question remains to be answered for cyberspace Superman fans: Will he shave his head?

Hair really seems to be a hang-up for comics-to-film followers.  Singer's choice of Patrick Stewart for Professor X in his X-Men films was immediately embraced by X-fans-hey, he's a bright, articulate bald guy, so why not?  Stewart's pate had earlier  inspired speculation that he would be cast as cue-ball Mr. Freeze in Joel Shumacher's Batman and Robin debacle (a role that unfortunately went to Arnold Schwarzenegger).  So it should come as no surprise that Kate 'Blondie' Bosworth's casting is raising a few hackles, most of them brunette.

Yes, Kate Bosworth is blonde-for now.  But a quick check of Internet Movie Database reveals that Bosworth's natural hair color is brown (she also has two different color eyes, one blue, one hazel, a condition known as Heterochromium iridium).  Though most of her on-screen appearances have been as a blonde, she went au natural in Wonderland.  She recently portrayed (blonde) singer Sandra Dee opposite Spacey (as crooner Bobby Darin) in Beyond the Sea, exhibiting enough on-screen chemistry to make Luthor's romantic pursuit of Lois both viable and believable.

Personally, I think (blonde) Bosworth would've made a great Sue Storm in the Fantastic Four film, a far better choice than (brunette) Jessica Alba.  For that matter, I can see (brown-haired) Spacey as brilliant-but-aloof scientist Reed Richards.  And (bald) Michael Chiklis, the FF's Ben Grimm/Thing, has long been my cinematic choice for Lex Luthor.  But fans-including me-should leave such decisions to the pros.  Deciding who would be better as Lois or Lex is almost a matter of splitting hairs.
