A remake of John Carpenter's horror classic from 1979, The Fog, topped the box office in another lackluster weekend for Hollywood in which the top ten films' total gross was a full 22% below that of the top ten from the same weekend in 2004. The Fog, which starred Smallville's Tom Welling and Maggie Grace (from ABC's Lost), earned an estimated$12.2 million, far below comparable horror remakes that opened earlier this year such as The Amityville Horror, which took in $23.5 million in its first weekend. Like most horror films The Fog attracted a younger crowd with 61% of the audience under 25 -- but don't expect much in the way of 'legs' from this remake, which earned only a C+ grade from moviegoers.
One of the few films bucking the downward trend was Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit, which declined only 27% in its second frame and came in a close second with an estimated $11.7 million. With a dearth of 'all-ages' films opening this month, Wallace & Gromit might eventually gross close to $90 million domestically.
Another film that continues to perform well is David Cronenberg's A History of Violence, which is based on the DC graphic novel written by John Wagner. A History of Violence dropped only 29% and brought its cumulative earnings to more than $22.6 million.
Tim Burton's Corpse Bride remained in the top ten in its fifth weekend of release, earning an estimated $3.4 million. With a domestic box office total of $47.6 million so far, Corpse Bride is certain to top 1993's The Nightmare Before Christmas, which earned $50 million in the U.S.
Serenity fell out of the top ten, dropping 57% in its third weekend. Joss Whedon's film has earned over $22 million domestically, and should do very well on DVD.
