Voice actor Billy West recently posted news on his Website about the future of Futurama. According to West 'The Futurama Project is a done deal... there are four (full feature length) DVD movies that we'll start recording at the end of July or August.' West should know whereof he speaks since he was a key member of the Futurama cast, voicing the characters of Fry, Professor Farnsworth, Dr Zoidberg, Zapp Brannigan, and Nixon's head.
Futurama, which was created by Matt Groening (The Simpsons), was abruptly canceled in 2002 after four seasons on Fox, but the series has performed exceptionally well in reruns on the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block where it has been paired with the Family Guy cartoon. Thanks to its tremendous success on DVD and on Adult Swim, the Family Guy is back on the Fox Network, but Futurama episodes are more costly than Family Guy shows due to the more advanced animation used on Futurama, so it appears that the producers of the 4 new Futurama films are going the direct-to-DVD route in order to earn back the rather considerable investment in a reasonable period of time. Don't be surprised if the Cartoon Network is involved in the production or financing of the Futurama films, which may well air on Adult Swim eventually.
Futurama has retained a loyal following thanks to repeated airings on the Cartoon Network and an excellent Futurama comic book series published by Bongo.
