Home Media Retailing has reported that Star Trek: The Animated Series will debut on DVD on November 21st.  All 22 episodes of the cartoon Star Trek series, which appeared on NBC for two seasons (1973-1975), will be included in the 4-disk set, which will retail for $35.  Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry wrote some of the animated series' episodes and the cast from the original series, which appeared on NBC from 1966-1969, voiced their iconic characters in the animated version.

Filmation Associates (He-Man, Fat Albert) produced the Star Trek animated series, which won the Daytime Emmy in 1975 for 'Outstanding Children's Series.'  Although the series did air on Saturday mornings, it was originally intended for primetime and the themes in the episodes of the animated series echo those in the rest of the Star Trek canon.

David Gerrold wrote the sequel to his classic 'The Trouble With Tribbles' episode for the animated series, which boasted a strong writing staff that included D.C. Fontana, Stephen Kandel, Chuck Menville, Len Janson, and Walter Koenig (yes Chekov wrote an episode, 'The Infinite Vulcan').

Star Trek: The Animated Series is the last Star Trek property to make it to DVD, and over the years there have been numerous rumors that a DVD release was imminent (see 'Star Trek Animated Series on DVD').  The delay in the release of the animated Star Trek has at least one major benefit -- the price, which reflects the  current heavy competition among TV on DVD titles, is about one-third of the cost that was originally forecast.
