According to The Hollywood Reporter Warner Bros. has shifted the debut of Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain from October 13th to November 22nd. The new date actually represents something of a vote of confidence in the film, which stars Rachel Weisz and Hugh Jackman, since it is the Wednesday before the Thanksgiving holiday, traditionally the prime date for late fall releases.
On its new date however, The Fountain, which is basically a love story that resonates through three different time periods (16th Century Central America, the present, and the far future), will have to contend with another time-traveling romantic epic, Tony Scott's Deja Vu, which opens on the same date and deals with a federal agent who travels back in time to save a woman only to fall in love with her during the ordeal.
For retailers Aronofsky's The Fountain offers one of 2006's better opportunities to merchandise a movie tie-in graphic novel. After Aronofsky was originally unable to get a studio to finance The Fountain, he turned it into a 176-page graphic novel (with art by Kent Williams), which Vertigo published in hardcover ($39.99) last year. In October Universe will publish an expanded trade paperback edition of The Fountain ($30), which will include production stills, script pages and designs from the film.
