Mattel is launching its HyperScan (see 'San Diego News and Notes') combination video and collectible card game system in October, starting with the X-Men, Ben 10 and Interstellar Wrestling League properties.  It's designed to be a step beyond plug-and-play games and targets boys between 8 and 14.

To get started, HyperScan comes with a console, one controller and a game pack (a CD and six cards) for $69.99 MSRP.  Game Packs, which include a game CD and six cards) will retail at $19.99 and Card Booster Packs (six cards) will retail at $9.99.

The game console reads HyperScan CDs and cards.  The character cards record the evolution of behaviors and increased strength as the character proceeds through 20 levels of play. The card set for each property includes 80-100 cards with a rarity scheme (common, uncommon, and rare), and three Ultra (promo) Cards.

The Marvel Heroes game is due out in November, Avatar in January and Spider-Man 3 next spring.  Mattel hopes to add more gender-neutral licensed properties in the future.

Consoles and games will be sold in mass retail outlets.  Mattel also plans to distribute to the hobby industry and views that channel as a good opportunity for long-term support of the cards at retail, although it's unlikely the hobby will be able to compete with mass merchants on the consoles.

HyperScan developers promise 'no blood and guts action' and games will generally meet standards of an E10+ or Teen ratings.  Of the first three, X-Men will be rated 'T', and Ben 10 and IWL will be rated E10+.

Mattel promoted the game at major summer shows, including San Diego Comic-Con International (see 'San Diego News and Notes') and GenCon.
