The Universal Press Syndicate has informed some 300 newspapers that carry Aaron McGruder's comic strip, The Boondocks, that they 'should not count on it coming back in the foreseeable future,' and added that 'numerous attempts to pin McGruder down on a date that the strip would be coming back were unsuccessful.'

After enduring the daily grind of producing the daily strip for six years, McGruder took a sabbatical some six months ago.  The animated version of The Boondocks has been renewed for a second season on the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, the first season is out on DVD (see 'Boondocks DVD Debuts at #7'), and a film is in the works (see 'Sony Options Boondocks').  The success of The Boondocks in other media has led some to speculate that McGruder may not return to the deadline-intensive world of newspaper comic strips, but McGruder has not publicly commented on the situation.

Four collections of The Boondocks newspaper strip have been published and having been selling better, especially in the bookstore market, since The Boondocks animated series began its run on the Cartoon Network.
