Superman Returns topped both the DVD sales and rental charts last week, according to Home Media Retailing, offering pop culture retailers another opportunity to sell tie-in merchandise as well as the DVD itself.   And although there were some problems with some of the other Superman DVDs released this month (see 'Superman DVDs Missing Content'), the total weight of the Superman DVDs newly available makes the property especially important for the holiday season.

Clerks II also premiered strong on DVD, coming in at #4 on both the sales and DVD charts as Kevin Smith's loyal fans once again demonstrate the long tail for this property.  Although the box office on the film was unspectacular by tentpole standards (see 'Zoom Crashes and Burns'), DVD sales look brisk and fans will presumably be watching the stoner sequel for many months to come.  T-shirts, the Tales from the Clerks trade paperback, and other associated merchandise is available from Graphitti.

This week, the big news in DVD sales is the 5 million copies that Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Man's Chest sold the first day on sale, on its way to an estimated 20 million copies, which would make it the #1 live action DVD release ever.  In addition to a regular edition and a two-disc special edition, Buena Vista also did a special edition for Best Buy with a bonus disc of extras available nowhere else.  Best Buy was also offering a purchase-with-purchase Jack Sparrow Bobblehead for $9.99.
