Reiner Knizia’s Middle-earth-themed two player boardgame Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation will return in a new version, scheduled for release in the third quarter of 2013.  This new version will include a minor facelift to the graphics and a more compact size.

Originally released in 2002, Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation pits the heroes of the famed Fellowship of the Ring against the minions of the dark lord Sauron in a compact strategy board game.  One player controls the heroes, trying to sneak the One Ring into Mordor, while the opponent controls the evil creatures of Middle-earth in their effort to reclaim the Ring.  A very “asymmetrical” game, the heroes of the Fellowship must use cunning and stealth to overcome their militarily superior foes.

This new version of the game includes the original version and the "Variant" and "Draft" versions originally introduced in the Deluxe edition.  The rulebook has been expanded to include rules clarifications, and the visual reminders of game mechanics have been added to the board.  The character stands and playing cards have been reduced in size, making the game physically smaller.  Many cards also have new artwork.  The suggested retail price will be $34.95.
