Steve Jackson Games has announced that Munchkin Legends, its new game, will be exclusively sold by Target. This new version is now available from Target’s online store, and will be in the physical stores later in 2013.
Munchkin Legends adds mythological monsters and creatures to Steve Jackson’s tongue-in-cheek fantasy card game of back-stabbing treasure hunters. Players use legendary items such as the "Death Mask," "Achilles' Heels," or Thor’s Hammer to defeat mythic foes the likes of the "Heebie-Jeebies," "Johnny Zucciniseed," or the "Kraken."
Munchkin Legend uses the same mechanics as Munchkin; it can be combined with any Munchkin game or expansion.
This will be the first exclusive Steve Jackson Games has granted for a stand-alone game. Company founder and Munchkin creator Steve Jackson explained his reasons behind the decision. "In the past few years, Target has done an amazing job with strategy games. They’ve brought our hobby to the mass market—Munchkin, of course, and other gamer favorites like Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride. The adventure game designers appreciate what Target has done to build up our category, and Munchkin Legends is a thank-you!"
Like the earlier Munchkin games, Munchkin Legends will be illustrated by John Kovalic. The game will include 168 cards and a Munchkin die. The suggested retail price will be $24.95.
Munchkin was inducted into the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design Hall of Fame during the 2013 Origins Game Fair (see "Origins Awards Winners").
