New Line has announced the release dates for the three DVD editions of the second Lord of the Rings feature, The Two Towers.  On August 26th, widescreen and fullscreen editions will be released at a $29.95 MSRP.  Both will include a second disc with lots of extras, including two behind-the-scenes programs ('On the Set' and 'Return to Middle Earth'), eight featurettes originally created for lordoftherings.net, a 10-minute preview of Return of the King, the Gollum Song music video, and more.

As it did last year, New Line is also releasing a Special Edition about three months later, on November 18th.  The Special Extended DVD Edition will include 35 minutes of additional scenes in the feature and two bonus discs of extras.  Price and extras have not yet been announced.

And of course, both of those lead into the release of the Return of the King on December 17th (see 'Best in Shows 2003').  The advertising and promotion surrounding the DVD releases and the run-up to the third film will create the largest opportunity to date to sell the numerous game and other products tied to this property (see 'Return of the King Tabletop Strategy Game,' 'Decipher Launches Fierce Black Rider Tour,' 'Sabertooth's Luke Peterschmidt on the Lord of the Rings CMG,' Fantasy Flight to Publish Lord of the Rings Trivia Game,' and 'Eagle Games Announces Lord of the Rights Board Game for Kids').
