Atlas Games will release a new edition of the classic RPG of martial arts movie action in summer 2015. The game is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter.
The original Feng Shui RPG was designed by Robin Laws and published by Daedalus Entertainment in 1996, with the second edition by Altas Games following in 1999. The game shares its Hong Kong-style action movie world with the Shadowfist CCG.
The simple game mechanics focus mainly on the game’s combat system (based on skill checks), which is made to flow very quickly from one action sequence to another, like the stylized martial arts flicks on which it’s based. Setting requirements are vague, allowing players to set the game in a reality of their own choosing (with or without magic). Characters are based on protagonist archetypes with "schticks" (special abilities) to enhance their usefulness in the game. The game’s name refers to the powerful "chi" force that gathers in places, so those that control these places of power have more powerful feng shui, and tend to control the world.
Specific improvements to the new version were not outlined in detail, but time travel (both backward and forward) and alternate realms seem to be the focus in the color text.
The basic goal of the Kickstarter campaign was to fund the 256-page hardcover rulebook (black and white with 32-page color section). The game blew through its modest funding goal of $8,000 in the first 20 minutes, and has raised $98,606 from 1,723 backers ($57.23/backer average) as of this writing, with 23 days to go, currently trending toward $382,000 according to kicktraq.com. The campaign includes two retailer-only levels.
The Feng Shui 2: Chi Warrior Edition rulebook is planned for Gen Con 2015 pre-sale, followed by the trade release. MSRP was not announced.
