Topps reported its fiscal third quarter (ended November 26, 2005) results on Thursday, and although sales were up 3.6% to $72.8 million for the period, operating income was a loss of $1.3 million compared to income of $3.4 million the previous year. In addition to improvements in its sports card sales, WizKids' constructible strategy games were cited as a positive contributor with an ominous note that the CSG sales were 'despite growing market softness in the collectible games segment.' Topps attributed the decline in earnings to drops in demand and scheduling shifts in Italy and lower U.S. confectionary results for the period.
