King Kong opened relatively quietly for a film with such gargantuan expectations, with $9.8 million in tickets sold on its opening day, a Wednesday.  This is only the 21st biggest opening Wednesday, according to Box Office Mojo, but the movie also opened further before Christmas than most Wednesday opens. 

 

The film is getting great reviews, both from critics and consumers; 84% of the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are positive.  Expectations are still high for King Kong (see 'Battle of the Fantasy Heavyweights'), and for the products based on it.
