Variety is reporting that the trailer for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will debut on February 14th at showings of the fantasy film, The Spiderwick Chronicles. The new Indy trailer, which will then be available on the Web, bows less than four months before the film opens on May 22nd, a far cry from standard modern movie marketing practices, which typically have teaser trailers running a year or more in advance of the film's debut.
Paramount has indicated that the reason for the delay was the fact that the film has just wrapped up shooting and the right material just wasn't available, plus awareness of the film is high enough that the producers felt that they didn't have to do much more to fuel the fire other than to release a few photos from the set to Vanity Fair.
But the new Indy Jones film isn't the only movie that Hollywood studios are keeping under wraps. Fans are still waiting for the first theatrical trailer from Marvel's Hulk film that debuts in mid-June as well as similarly 'late' promos for other summer 2008 films including Universal's third Mummy film and New Line's Sex and the City.
