The Pee-Wee Herman Show, starring Paul Reubens and mixing live actors and puppets, will begin a 17-performance run at The Music Box at the Fonda Theater in Hollywood on November 8th. Many of the original cast, characters, and crew will be involved in the new production. Characters announced as returning include Pee-wee, Miss Yvonne, Cowboy Curtis, Jambi, and Chairry.
The original property began as a live show at The Groundlings Theatre in 1981, then moved to the Roxy Theatre on Sunset Strip for five sold out months. The show was taped for an HBO special, which led to a nationwide tour and more TV exposure before the breakout film Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, Tim Burton’s first feature and featuring Danny Elfman’s first original film score, was released in 1985. Pee-Wee’s Playhouse began its five season run on television in 1986, and a second film, Pee-Wee's Big Top, was released in 1988.
The DVDs of the TV show have been available for several years. While the TV show was on the air, a wide range of very cool licensed merchandise was available, including, of course, the Talking Pee-Wee doll.
