The Hollywood trades are reporting that Jude Law, Christopher Lee, Ray Winstone, Frances de la Tour, and Richard Griffiths have all joined the cast of Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of Brian Selznick’s Caldecott Award winning quasi-graphic novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Production on the film, which also stars Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Asa Butterfield, and Chloe Moretz began today in London. The 3-D film will debut in December of 2011 (see “Scorsese to Film Hugo Cabret in 3D”).
In other casting news, Variety reported that Andy Serkis, best known for his role as Gollum in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy, will play the key role of Caesar in Fox’s Rise of the Apes, the studio’s Planet of the Apes prequel, which also stars James Franco, Freida Pinto, and John Lithgow. Rise of the Apes is slated to debut in theaters on June 24th, 2011.
