Disney has released a new trailer for Planes, which is quite likely to be the most successful animated feature film of the summer when it is released on August 9th.  While Planes is an “original” property, this trailer shows that the new film’s affinity with Pixar’s Cars movies may extend beyond just anthropomorphizing vehicles. 
 
While Planes’ narrative similarities with the Cars films will undoubtedly result in some bashing from the critics, the trailer reveals that Planes will be the kind of highly kinetic film that will please its target audience and deliver another example of the very best in computer animation.
