Syfy and The Asylum announced that a Sharknado merchandise program will be launched with Earthbound. Categories will include t-shirts (the first products, due out soon), bags, posters, accessories, costumes, and gaming.
The property has been building momentum since its first airing on July 11, which caused a Twitterstorm of around 5000 tweets a minute at its peak but had a fairly modest audience of 1.4 million viewers. The second airing, on July 17, drew 1.9 million, and the third, on July 27, drew 2.1 million, the best yet, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A fourth showing is set for August 22, leading into Ghost Shark.
The film is getting a limited theatrical release this Friday with 200 midnight shows at Regal theaters across the country.
Syfy is also planning a sequel, which will move the setting to New York, for premiere in July 2014.
