Irwin Hasen, who wrote and drew the Dondi comic strip for years, and was DC’s last surviving World War II-era artist, passed away on Friday at 96, according to the New York Daily News. Hasen began his work in comics in 1940, and ended up doing work for DC Comics from 1941 to 1952, with a break for his Army service. In that time he drew the The Flash, and The Green Lantern, and along with Bill Finger co-created the character Wildcat.
But he switched to newspaper strips in the mid-1950s, and never looked back. From 1955 to 1986 Hasen did the art for the long-running daily newspaper strip Dondi, and managed the strip after co-creator Gus Edson died in 1966.
