One of the axioms about Hollywood (or most businesses, for that matter) is that if something works, they’ll keep doing more until it stops working. That’s certainly the case with comic-based TV shows, and so it’s not a total surprise that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jeffrey Bell and S.H.I.E.L.D. writer Paul Zbyszewski are developing a spinoff show for ABC, according to Entertainment Weekly. The show could launch as early as the Fall season, according to the report.
Current ratings for S.H.I.E.L.D. remain solid, with a live+7 audience of 7.4 million viewers.
There’s no time for a full launch episode in S.H.I.E.L.D. before the end of this season, but plot elements and characters could lead into the new show. The new show could also premiere at mid-season, or not at all, depending on the success of efforts to come up with a good concept and ABC’s other options for new series.
ABC’s Agent Carter, a S.H.I.E.L.D. spin-off from a different era (see "'S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Premiere Flashes Back to WWII with Howling Commandos"), has about 60% odds of renewal, EW said.
