Marvel Comics has announced the early 2016 launch of a new ongoing Black Widow comic book series from the Eisner Award-winning team behind the Daredevil revival, writer Mark Waid, artist Chris Samnee, colorist Matt Wilson, and letterer Joe Caramagna.

The Black Widow character, who has been featured prominently in Marvel movies where she is played with great style by Scarlett Johansson, gives the Marvel Universe a character who is as comfortable in the world of action adventure and espionage as in any super-powered conflict, which opens all sorts of narrative options that are not necessarily available in straight superhero fare.

Does the launch of a new Black Widow comic book series set the stage for the long-rumored Black Widow standalone movie?  There is no definitive word yet, but the recent shift of control at Marvel Studios engineered by Kevin Feige may pave the way for an expansion of the Marvel cinematic universe that many feel is way overdue (see “Feige Threatened to Leave to Force Marvel Shakeup”).
