The new version will be the same game as Richard Garfield’s original King of Tokyo, with mostly cosmetic changes. The monsters in the game, including The King, Gigazaur, Meka Dragon, and Alienoid, will all feature new artwork, designed to match the images that will be used in the digital version of the game currently under development. While the images are new, the abilities and power cards for these characters have not been changed.
The rulebook also gets an update, with revised and reworked text designed to make the game easier to learn.
In addition, two “new” characters will be added: Cyber Kitty and the Space Penguin, which was originally available only to tournament participants.
The monsters and Evolution cards from earlier versions of the game (and its expansions) will all be fully compatible with the new edition. However, the Power cards will have a new card back image, which does cause a compatibility problem unless card sleeves are used. Iello is planning to release a set of King of Tokyo card sleeves.Following the release of the English language edition, 14 other languages will be produced through the end of the year.
Iello has reached a deal with Target to produce an exclusive version of the new edition for the big box chain. In the Target exclusive, the Gigazaur monster will be replaced by a Baby Gigazaur. After one year, Iello will make the Baby Gigazaur available through other channels as well.Click the Gallery below for monster images and large versions of all pics.
