Abrams' SelfMadeHero will release Fionnuala Doran’s The Trial of Roger Casement on September 13.
Irish-born Roger David Casement was a British diplomat, humanitarian activist, Irish nationalist, and poet. In 1911 he was knighted by King George V for his humanitarian work. However, five years later he was stripped of all his honors and hanged for treason.
This book chronicles the downfall of the Irishman who was once feted for his humanitarian work throughout the British Empire, and later condemned as both a revolutionary and a homosexual. Doran details Casement’s attempt to gain German support for an Irish uprising in 1913, which led to his arrest in County Kerry. There are graphic depictions of Casement’s three-day interrogation at Scotland Yard, his incarceration in the Tower of London, and his time in the dock at Old Bailey. Hopes of a reprieve vanished when his private diaries were seized and used as evidence against him. Casement was defiant till the end, delivering a memorable speech from the dock.
The 6.5” x 9.5” 120-page paperback has an MSRP of $19.95.
