Scholastic will publish the first graphic novel from children’s author Philip Pullman in June 2017.
Pullman is the author of the bestselling His Dark Materials trilogy, the first of which was adapted into the feature film The Golden Compass. He has now teamed with illustrator Fred Fordham to produce the graphic novel The Adventures of John Blake: Mystery of the Ghost Ship, which is intended for readers ages 8 – 12.
The story will follow young sailor John Blake, who is trapped in the mists of time by a terrible research experiment gone wrong. Blake and his ship, The Mary Alice, are doomed to sail between centuries, trying to find a way home. One day, John and the crew rescue a shipwrecked young girl, Serena, and promise to return her to her own time. But there is an evil head of the Dahlberg Corporation to contend with first, and John and Serena must stop him from bending the world to his will.
The story is first being serialized in The Phoenix, a UK weekly children’s publication. The serialized comic will be collected in a full-color graphic novel which will be published simultaneously in the UK, U.S., and Canada in June 2017.
