Amblin’s live-action take on Deb Lucke’s graphic novel The Lunch Witch has cast in-demand comedian Kate McKinnon in the lead role, reports Deadline.
McKinnon will play Grunhilda, the latest in a long line of witches who must navigate a world that no longer believes in magic. McKinnon should be a good fit for the quirky character, whose only skills are cooking up foul concoctions and scaring children, making her the perfect lunch lady.
The Lunch Witch will be directed by Clay Kaytis, who is making his first foray into live-action films after directing the popular animated Angry Birds film (see “Amblin Acquires 'The Lunch Witch'”).
{IMAGE_3}The Lunch Witch, a 2015 release from Papercutz, was listed as one of the 10 best graphic novels of the year by School Library Journal (see "Top Graphic Novel Lists of 2015 Round-Up"). The follow-up to the popular graphic novel, The Lunch Witch: Knee-Deep in Niceness, was released in October (see “'Lunch Witch #2: Knee-Deep in Niceness'”).
McKinnon is very much in demand these days. The Saturday Night Live actress has played well-liked takes on Hillary Clinton and Trump spokeswoman Kellyanne Conway. Her breakthrough performance in Ghostbusters has catapulted her popularity, and she has lead roles in the ensemble comedies Office Christmas Party (opening this weekend) and Rock That Body (2017).
